Top Ten Fashion Do’s For the Plus Size Fashionista

Last week, I guest blogged over at Full- Figure Plus about the Top Ten Fashion Don’ts for the plus-size Fashionista. Today, I bring you back to the other side of the spectrum. Now that we know what you are not supposed to do when it comes to fashion, let us address the “do’s” of fashion from the plus size perspective!

Embrace Your Curves
Yes, you are a plus-sized woman- so what? You have curves that are not going away any time soon, and this is okay. So what is a plus-size Fashionista to do? Embrace your curves. Own your curves. Love your curves. Once you come to terms with you and your beautiful curves, fashion will no longer be a hindrance but now a joy that you eagerly look forward to! In addition, the societal barriers will no longer stifle your inner Fashionista! So… have you embraced your curves yet?

Think Outside Your Traditional Fashion Box
Gone are the days when plus-size fashion was ever called fashion! We now have options that stretch way beyond Torrid, Lane Bryant, Old Navy, and Ashley Stewart. While nothing is wrong with these designers, there are so many more that bring high fashion to you! Thought you could never wear jeans? There is Svoboda, Embody Denim, and James Jeans! Dying to don a designer dress? Then rock a fabulous frock from Monif C., Qristyl Frazier, or Anna Scholz. These are only a few of those who are available to you! Get my drift? Experiment! How will you know what works for your curves, if you do not venture out?

Accessorize to Maximize
Polishing off your look has never been easier, especially now as there are more and more designers who are catching on, that not all jewelry is created equal! I would be so frustrated when wanting to buy a ring or bracelet that did not accommodate my size. A necklace that stopped just short of hitting the right mark- you know?
To complete your look, you should always fashion either earrings and a few bracelets or a necklace and a fabulous ring! Do not forget your fierce handbag and your wicked heels! Its all about your finished look for your style!

Love Thy Tailor
While many plus-size designers are paying attention to your curves, there is always a need to tailor your pieces that look custom designed for you! What a better way to make a $100 jacket look like a $500 one! Tailoring your outfit creates a polished look that pulls your outfit all together! Nothing looks worse than really cute jeans that are anchoring your curves to the ground! A dress that gapes in the hips only adds to your curves, rather than accentuate them! If you are lucky enough to not have to tailor your pieces- then this rule does not apply to you (although most women with curves will benefit from a nip and tuck of their fits!)

Invest in Your Fashion Staples
Now, I have been told by many designers for the Plus-Size woman that they hear complaints about some of their prices. While I could agree with you in this economy right now, there are few items that you MUST invest in, in order for you to build and sustain a working wardrobe! Why? These pieces are timeless and seasonless, meaning that no matter the time of the year or whatever trend is hot, you can easily take your key item and update your wardrobe with accents rather than buying a whole new wardrobe each season. These are your classics. What are they? Every woman must have an amazing button up blouse, pair of tailored trousers, at least two pairs of butt hugging boot cut jeans (dark wash), the curve loving LBD (Little Black Dress), and a professional pant or skirt suit.

Walk with Confidence
Nothing kills an amazing outfit than an insecure person. It distracts from the outfit, only bringing attention to you and how uncomfortable you are, rather than how beautiful you are! Yes, it does take some time to build up that confidence, but the only way you can do this, is to fake it until you make it! Wearing confidence is beautiful, allowing your beauty to reflect and enhance your fashion choices! Do not be shy or apologetic for your curves- OWN THEM!
Accentuate the Positive
Now ladies, we all have our favorite assets, yes, even you! What are they? Do you love your waist line? Then rock cinched waist belts or dresses. Love your legs? Then show them off with shorter dresses! Basically, when you enhance whichever assets you like the best, your confidence will show through, allowing the Fashionista in you to shine! Don’t know your best feature? You probably already know without even knowing it! Ask yourself, what do you feel most comfortable in, then why? Chances are you will find a reason that relates to your best assets! Me? I love my waist and my cleavage, so I opt for pieces that enhance those curves! I am comfortable and I feel good.

Camouflage the Flaws
We all have areas we don’t necessary hate, but do not love either, and that is okay! What you do is hide those flaws! By experimenting with shapes and colors, you will learn how to hide these “flaws” and accentuate those which work for you! Now, by reading this, you are no longer able to say that your whole body is a flaw- NOT ALLOWED! I loathe my tummy and my handles, so you will often see me in a flowy top that flows away from the tummy area that has a v- neck and has an empire cut!

Have Fun and Take Risks
Clearly finding amazing fashion can be a challenge for a Plus Size Fashionista for the obvious reasons, but that should not detract from the play with fashion! With more and more emerging designers, you are able to experiment with color, shapes, fits, cuts, and pieces that you once thought “not allowed” now that designers are designing with you in mind! Never worn color? Be daring in Yellow! Never worn jeans? Be sassy in the right Skinny jeans! Never gone sleeveless? Be sexy in a strappy bra- friendly top! Get my drift?

Let your Style Define Your Curves
Each season, the fashion industry highlights the different trends, looks and styles for the season. Take these trends, digest them, and make them work for YOU! Never be dictated by your curves to only wear a particular look! Your clothes and fashion choices should define, enhance, and compliment you and all your wonderful curves! So what is your style? Laid back, boho chic, classic, trendy, or tomboy? Whichever it is, Never let your curves define your style, let your STYLE define your Curves! Keep it Curvy!

Fashion – Why do women and beauty products work well together, the answer to that is quite simple, cosmetics make you look beautiful and women want to be beautiful so there you have it – a match made in heaven – the perfect duo
Today`s fashion and latest shades in lipstick is no guarantee to looking beautiful if you are not feeling good about yourself.

It`s a funny old world – the fashion world. Take those glamour models that grace the catwalk with the latest in fashion design – only to go and mess the entire look of the whole outfit with an expression of depression along with a ridiculous unbalanced walk like that of a woman who has just downed 10 pints of lager – now where is the beauty in that I ask you.

Remember never to imitate the pose of a model on a night out with friends because that friendship may just cease and heaven forbid if you are looking for a date with the opposite sex – then the chances of that happening are zilch. If you want to impress then it is all down to how you dress. You will always be at your best if you feel good. A smile radiates beauty so regardless of what the fashion it is you adorn – be sure to smile and that is half of the battle won in feeling good and looking beautiful

Why is it you wear the same colours when you go out? Why is it you feel that a certain colour is not ideally suited to your complexion even though it is in fashion? Well now is the time to change all that. Today`s fashionable colours are just oozing to expel your beauty within. Positive results are guaranteed after you have boosted your confidence into looking beautiful with the latest in fashion styles and colours.

For example if you are not partial to the colour green or orange up next to the skin, well that is fine, but, at the time you decided this colour was not for you, did you ever give it a minutes thought that it was just that particular shade of green that you were not comfortable with. Remember there are 40 shades of green, now do you get my drift. Now as for orange – a colour that does need to be given much thought behind for a person`s skin tone – but if you like orange then dress it up with accessories to compliment the shade itself – this will work wonders.

Just by changing the shade of one particular colour and style of dress can be the start of finding the real beauty within. Your inner beauty may have lain static for far to long all because you took for granted that the first bright lime green luminous blouse you ever tried on was not for you, therefore leaving you resisting future fashion garments in green, But did you ever consider replacing that lime green blouse for pretty cowl neck musky jade shade.. Also a change of hairstyle can alter your whole image along with the colour that you banished from the wardrobe.

Natural Makeup For Natural Beauty

Usually when we think of natural beauty we think of someone without makeup. Did you know that your natural beauty can be enhanced by using natural beauty products? That is: makeup and cosmetic products that are 100% natural and organic. Unfortunately most of the makeup that women wear is full of harmful toxins and chemicals. Makeup products and skincare products containing these actually can do more to harm the skin than enhance natural beauty.

You have probably heard it said that “…if looks could kill…”. For many years women have been led to believe that in order to look beautiful they have to wear makeup. Most large cosmetic companies market their products so that you feel that you can’t live without them. Who of us hasn’t seen a commercial and thought: “I would like to look like that”. This leads many women to put beauty first rather than health. Of course we all want to fit in and be accepted – but at what cost. Just think how much the makeup industry affects our thinking: How many films have you seen when the actress awakes in the morning without any makeup on? Probably not very many. So women start thinking that they have to look like this. Then their partners also start thinking the same. Then there is the other extreme. The terms ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ still have a stigma attached to them, and so many think that buying natural organic makeup products is only something for hippies.

Beauty though is all relative. You could say that it is skin-deep. Fashions also change. For example, what was fashionable in the 80’s would look pretty ridiculous in today. It used to be the fashion that women would have white skin – this showed that they were rich and didn’t have to spend a lot of time outdoors. Now the fashion is to have a tanned skin, which is to show the same – we’ve got a lot of money for recreation and exotic holidays. We have been led to believe that a tanned skin is a healthy skin. Actually that could not be further from the truth. A tanned skin is actually a damaged skin.

Culture also plays a part in what is acceptable and what is not. Coco Channel is quoted as saying: “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” For example in Burma is desirable for women to wear neck rings to elongate their necks. It is also reported that tourism is to blame for this because they are a popular attraction for tourists. In China feet biding used to be popular. (This is a practice whereby children’s feet are bound to prevent further growth). The results were deformed feet. So we have to ask ourselves – how much of our thinking is being dictated by the media, culture and our peers? If you lived in China in the late 1800’s would you have had your children feet bound? Even if it meant you being different and being rejected as a ‘poor person’ or someone of a ‘lower social class’?

During the last few years many studies have been carried out which show that most of the commercially available makeup products on the market contain dangerous levels of toxic chemicals and other irritants. Just take a look at the ingredients of any makeup or skincare product. How much of is sounds natural and how much of sound like you need a degree in chemistry to understand it? Even if you could understand everything that is listed under ingredients the cosmetic industry still hide toxic ingredients behind innocent sounding labels. For example: ‘scent’. Seems harmless enough, but the ‘scent’ could contain hundreds of different chemical combinations. Sometimes you have to wonder if the makeup products have been produced for putting on your skin or cleaning your car engine.

It’s also worth noting that many of the commercially available makeup products actually cause skin irritations and allergies. Even some of the so-called cures for eczema or acne actually aggravate the skin and can make it worse.

Natural organic products are manufactured in such a way that they do not cause harm to humans or animals. They are biodegradable these organic and natural products are great for the environment as well.

By using natural organic makeup you will enhance your appearance and at the same time actually care for the health of your body and skin. In the long term, using natural organic makeup and skin care products will maintain a healthy balance in your body thereby improving your natural beauty and reducing the need for using too much cosmetics.

How is this so? Let’s examine one example. Did you know that drinking enough water moisturizes your skin? It also has many other ‘side-effects’, it keeps us healthier, improves metabolism, reduces headaches, and if we talk about makeup products, reduces the need to use so much moisturizer. All from something that comes free out the faucet. Think about this: whatever we put on our skin is absorbed by our body. Did you ever wonder where the skin cream went after you applied it? Yes, into our body and some of it is even metabolizes by the internal organs. If you use only products that are organic and contain natural ingredients you will help to keep your skin healthy.

Natural beauty will help you look beautiful naturally. Don’t risk your health for the sake of fashion. It’s been done in the past and many women are still paying the price. What will be the cost of using makeup products that are full of toxic chemicals? Already studies are showing that some of these chemicals are turning up in different cancers. While a definite link has to be proved, it is alarming that cancers seem to be on the rise the more we are using chemicals.

Natural makeup products are widely available and by using them you will not have ‘looks to die for’. They are just as effective as their toxic counterparts – but without the health risks. Remember also to care for you health by what you eat. You naturally look more beautiful when you are in good health and natural makeup product will enhance your natural beauty.

Do You Follow the Latest Beauty Trends?

Every women wants to know what’s going on in the world of beauty trends. No one wants to feel left out, while not all of us are trying to stay on top of the fashion and cosmetic world as super models would, none the less beauty trends are an important part of who we are and our personal style.

With today’s method of the media sharing fashion information with us so quickly it’s amazing we don’t all look the same in the morning driving to work. When in reality if you actually tried to sit down and follow all these trends you’d realize it’s almost impossible to track them all. Nor is there a normal man or women that has the money to be able to follow them all.

We’re bombarded with beauty trends, monthly magazine covers are giving us a glimpse into the lifestyles of the rich and famous and all of the current beauty trends they’re following. Also articles that explain what’s hot and what’s not, also how to keep yourself trendy in today’s fast fashion world.

There are of course some staples, in that some beauty trends just don’t go away. For instance the some times stereo typical thought that our entire society believes thin women to be beautiful, and if you’re not part of this click you can’t be part of the beauty trend. This is something that seems to never end, as superficial as it might be, it’s always been here and doesn’t seem to be leaving us anytime soon.

Beauty trends such as what make-up to apply during different seasons which grow and change as time goes on. How ever those like no wearing red one season, and it somehow being all the rage the next that allow the fashion and beauty industry to enjoy continued success. Hard to make a profit if we no longer buy their products.

It’s likely safe to say that your best friend Jenny from around the block didn’t devise the latest fashion trend. Just the coverage alone that new beauty trends get in newspaper, television, and magazines is enough to drive us to the correct answer, and allow us to realize we don’t have to look all that far for the creator of all this.

The big fashion and cosmetic companies are the ones that push these trends on us. They know that women enjoy a change to their style every so often so why not systematize it. They introduce new lines each season, and begin a new marketing campaign about why you must have the newest in eyeliner or Mock neck sweaters. Of course some of this is nice, and we all enjoy a change from time to time, but don’t get yourself caught in it or you could end up breaking the bank.

Want to avoid having to keep up with the Joneses next season? No problem, the next time you read in a trendy magazine that the lipstick color for the season is purple don’t jump the next bus to your local cosmetics store to pick some up. Rather consider if you like the color, and like the way you look wearing it. It’s easy to get caught up in all these beauty trends but it isn’t a must. Stay true to yourself, and the style you’ve created for yourself, then you’ll never worry about the next trend coming down the pipe.
